Michael J. Walsh (B.A., University of Cape Town; M.A.; Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara) is Associate Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at Vassar College. He teaches courses on the history of Chinese religions, and method and theory in the study of religion. He is particularly interested in monastic life, colonialism and religion, the production of sacred space, and cultural geography. His book, entitled Sacred Economies: Buddhist Monasticism and Territoriality in Medieval China, is to be published by Columbia University Press. He is currently working on a book project titled Colonial Visions: A Cultural History of the Religious Other in China.
