Prof. Mamiya, (B.A., University of Hawaii; M.Div., Union Theological Seminary; M.Phil., Ph.D., Columbia University) and Professor of Religion and Africana Studies on the Mattie M. Paschall Davis and Norman H. Davis Chair, is appointed in the Department of Religion and the Program in Africana Studies. He is the co-author of The Black Church in the African American Experience (Duke University Press, 1990) and the author of entries for the Encyclopedia of African American Culture and History (Macmillan,1994) on "The Nation of Islam," "Islam," and "Minister Louis Farrakhan. His published articles and chapters include: "Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam" in Contemporary Black Leaders,1994; "Christianity and Civil Society: Challenges From A Black Church Perspective" 1993; "The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." 1993; "Black Militant and Separatists Movements" co-authored,1988; "In the Receding Shadow of the Plantation: A Profile of Rural Clergy and Churches in the Black Belt" 1988. He is currently at work on a study of Islam in the African American Experience.
