He received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Harvard University, where he studied religion and culture in nineteenth- and twentieth-century America. He is particularly interested in religion and science, the history of Christianity, spirituality and “unchurched” religion, religion and popular culture, new religious movements and American religious encounters abroad. He has published articles on these and other subjects in scholarly journals and edited books and has recently completed his first book, Unsettled Minds: Psychology and the American Search for Spiritual Assurance (California: University of California Press, 2008). Unsettled Minds is a cultural history of how Americans have used psychological sciences to reimagine faith and overcome problems related to religious uncertainty.
